About the role

Position Summary We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Manager to lead and oversee our Tax and Accounting Services practice. This leadership position is responsible for managing client relationships, supervising professional staff, ensuring the delivery of high-quality tax and accounting services, and contributing to the continued growth and success of the firm.

The ideal candidate possesses strong technical expertise in public accounting, advanced knowledge of QuickBooks and Thomson Reuters software products, a thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), exceptional leadership and communication skills, and a commitment to providing outstanding client service. This individual must be willing to work additional hours during peak periods and lead by example through a strong work ethic and dedication to excellence.

Leadership & Management

  • Manage and oversee the firm's accounting and tax practice.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop professional staff, including managers, seniors, and associates.
  • Review work products for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with professional standards.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing coaching and professional development.
  • Foster a positive, collaborative, and client-focused culture.

Client Service

  • Serve as the primary relationship manager for key clients.
  • Provide proactive tax planning, consulting, and accounting solutions.
  • Meet regularly with clients to understand their business needs and identify opportunities for additional services.
  • Maintain exceptional client satisfaction through responsive and professional service.

Technical Responsibilities

  • Review complex business, partnership, trust, and individual tax returns.
  • Review financial statements, compilations, reviews, and accounting engagements.
  • Ensure financial statements are prepared in accordance with GAAP and applicable reporting standards.
  • Research and resolve complex tax and accounting issues.
  • Provide technical guidance to staff regarding accounting, tax, and financial reporting matters.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations.
  • Stay current on tax law changes, GAAP requirements, and accounting standards.

Technology & Process Management

  • Demonstrate advanced proficiency in QuickBooks Online and Desktop.
  • Utilize Thomson Reuters products, including UltraTax CS, Accounting CS, Practice CS, Fixed Assets CS, and related applications.
  • Assist in improving firm workflows, efficiencies, and technology utilization.
  • Support implementation of best practices and quality control procedures.

Business Development

  • Participate in business development initiatives and networking opportunities.
  • Identify opportunities to expand services within existing client relationships.
  • Assist partners in strategic planning and firm growth initiatives.

Required

  • Active CPA license.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field.
  • Minimum 8–10 years of progressive public accounting experience.
  • Extensive experience managing tax and accounting engagements.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial statement preparation, and financial reporting requirements.
  • Advanced knowledge of QuickBooks Online and Desktop.
  • Strong proficiency with Thomson Reuters software products.
  • Proven leadership and team management experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities.
  • Exceptional client relationship and people-management skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professionalism, accountability, and quality service.

Preferred

  • Experience overseeing multiple client engagements and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Experience developing, training, and mentoring professional staff.
  • Business development and practice growth experience.
  • Experience working with closely held businesses, construction companies, manufacturing companies, and high-net-worth individuals.

  • Need a seasoned professional at the Manager level; a Senior is already in place
  • Ted just completed his 49th tax season — need someone to take on review work and handle family-owned corporations
  • Someone who will roll up their sleeves, take their career seriously, and sees this as a long-term opportunity
  • Ownership/partnership opportunity is on the table (fast track to partner)
  • Target start date: October 1st

Firm Overview

  • 9–10 person firm focused on family-owned businesses
  • Heavy construction industry presence — also serve CNC, restaurant, HVAC, heating & cooling, and asphalt companies
  • Clients primarily Michigan-based, with some in Florida and Ohio (multi-state tax returns)
  • Client size up to $60M+
  • Take business from UHY and Plante Moran; known for consistency and client service
  • No one leaves unless they let them go. Have tenure people from 8+ years.

Work & Responsibilities

  • Tax returns, financial statements, trust returns, financial planning, and help with financing
  • POC (Percentage of Completion) accounting — goes beyond basic tax and book accounting
  • EBITDA calculations and year-end planning (heavy focus in October/November)
  • Estate plans and taxes
  • Multi-state tax returns
  • Referral work
  • October/November: review books and tax planning

Experience & Profile

  • 7–8+ years of experience
  • Strong accounting and audit background
  • Client-facing; ability to bring in business will be compensated
  • Career-oriented with partnership potential

Schedule & Work Environment

  • In-office, 5 days/week
  • Fridays off in June and July
  • Very laid back culture; family comes first
